There are several contributors to proverty. One example could be the environment or (country) that someone is living in. A person may not be able to support a family of five becuae of the low income they receive from their place of employment The area could just be an area of poverty where each person has to provide from their own source. The ramifications of poverty is that if there are no other sources provided to help the problem becomes bigger.

Poverty is a world wide epidemic. But nationally we can see that there are definately a lot of contributing factors. I think the rising costs in america make it hard for people to continue to "get by". Our wages have not increased as much as the cost of living. The minimum wage hasn't increased much at all in the past 10 years. People with out educations continue to struggle because the cost living continues to grow while their pay does not. I agree with the professor that if all americans could get some form of an equal education, then our future generations might have a better chance in getting higher paying jobs. The problem continues to be how our government can accomplish providing this equal education. Should the compensation provided to schools be directly related to the levels of standardized testing or should everyone get an equal piece of the pie regardless of how they use it? I think that schools should be awarded funds based on their need, but held accountable for what they do with those funds. They should be able to prove that the funds have gone to better educate our children.

There are so many factors that contribute to poverty. Many people are more at risk than others. The disabled, mentally ill, and substance abusers are some groups that are more susceptible to poverty since they may not be able to work. Other circumstances may predispose people to poverty such as lack of education due to poor schools. This leads to lack of skills for employment. One’s upbringing, culture, and environment, all have an affect on their socio-economic status. If someone grows up with deprivation of food or shelter, exposure to bad, drug/crime infested neighborhoods, in single parent poor households, or suffer from or witness abusive households, they don’t know anything else. To blame them for their state of poverty is totally absurd. In many cases, living in poverty can not be avoided. There needs to be more funding for assistance programs such as for income support, affordable housing, food, childcare, education, vocational training, and any other support services needed to help these people. Without intervention, the ramifications are astounding. There will be more hardships for individuals and families because the problems will just perpetuate themselves. There will be an increase in illegal activities for survival which will lead to a higher prison rate with more expense to taxpayers. Homicide and suicide rates will rise. More poverty will create more dysfunctional families, more mental illness such as depression due to situations which will lead to more neglect to children. Poverty is such a vicious cycle that is so hard to climb out of.

Poverty is an important and emotional issue. There are many factors that lead to poverty which include: high standards of living and the cost of living today. Inadequate education and employment opportunities, demographic areas. Poverty has many faces that change from time to time. Poverty is a cycle that is very hard to get out of especially if the resources for aid are not available. All of these factors have come together to intensify public problems and create a high crime rate.

I agree with Sarah that there are several contributors to poverty. One of the strongest contributors to poverty in our country is our social welfare system, how we take care of people, and the cost of living. Our government makes it very difficult for families as well as individuals to pay rent, buy food, and stay healthy. The price of war keeps our gas tanks on empty and nearly impossible to fill (even on payday). The safety net that is designed to catch those that fall through it has big holes in it and seems to only catch those smart enough to know how to cheat the system.

Poverty is a sad situation in this country. Many people on poverty do not have a chance to get ahead. Their incomes are too low, their neighborhoods are full of drug addicts, their buildings are rat infested and there are no programs for children in the school systems so they could be a part of the outside society to which they live in. So when I see this girl holding a sign for justice I just hope that someday their will be enough funding for the people on poverty so that they could have a better life and that the children of poverty could learn that there is more to life than living in poverty and if they want they can make it out of it.
