I was very interested in the lecture about success emphasis. I discussed your remarks with my husband after class, and we started debating over what you said about how we shouldn't promote that "you can be anything you want to be". He said that just because there are barriers in the way of success, like society and/or parents, that we should still push children to succeed. If not they will most likely grow up to commit crimes (innovation) or continuously be unemployed or on welfare (Retreatists).

I look forward to hearing anyone’s thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Jillian,
I see your point on "you can be anything you want to be" by supporting your love ones. The matter is in today's society you could have all the moral support but without the financial backing for education, tranportation, and all the neccessity that we take for granted that person will not succeed. Although the one scenario I thought was interesting was base on a true story Will Smith star in was "THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS."

Hi Class,
I was just thinking about the "class catergory" that Professor S. was talking about. What financial status decide who is in what class of upper, middle, or lower? And should that even matter in today's society? Would people look at you differently? I know myself from experience being a minority and telling folks that I am from Bridgeport people already judge me!

I was also thinking about the "Class Category". I was reading Takki's comments when he said "should it really matter what financial status we are in." I feel it should not matter, but in todays society there is alot of emphasis on money and who has what. Takki, some people can be very judgemental and that is wrong. No matter if you are white, black, yellow, brown we all are human beings and where we come from should not matter as long as we are good people and have good morals. I have also felt the pressures of society in my own town. Raising a teenage daughter on my own, we could not have what some of the others have and trying to teach my daughter that those material things seem important to you today, but who you are and how you treat people is really whats important!

Hi
I have been thinking about the definition of success emphasis related to material possessions. There are also those who label success as having a "title" in their job. Their job has defined them as opposed to their life. The material possessions may not as important but the power associated with the "title" are just as much an indicator of their success. The tendency is to forget that we are all equal, regardless of class.
I found the discussion on the power of the media very interesting. I was unaware that 7-8 companies own the media and the impact of their programming on our thinking. The example of the stereotyping of minorities as representing a higher percentage of those living in poverty when, in actuality, the ratio of Caucasians living in poverty is 2:1 was astounding to me. It raises the question as to what extent the media manipulates the truth. I found it disconcerting that some of the beliefs that we hold to be true may be distortions of the truth.
On a final note, with the middle class seeking to achieve a higher class status, it is already shown that people are using credit to acquire possessions and the potential effect of overspending on the lifestyle of those as well as the national economy could be devastating.

Why is it that who we are is based on what we have? Why is it that objects we obtain define our status in society? We are a material based society which emphasis on material things such as cars, houses, clothes and how much money we make instead of us being defined by our beilfs, ideas and attitudes. Isn't it a shame that we have catorgized people in classes ranging from elites down to permanent under class. Under class Wow, what a picker upper.

What really caused me to pause, was how important the home environment is to children, and how one can literlly, create living conditions, and mold a child into a certain type of human being. ..kym
